WHAT IS A CLEAR MIND?

A clear mind can perceive what is happening inside you and in your external environment (including your virtual life-space that includes media, remarks by others, and all information, misinformation, and disinformation about matters that you do not hear, see, or touch directly.) When your mind is clear, and some thought, emotion, or impulse arises from within, you can discern its roots and meaningful connections. When ideas about people and things from outside enter your mind, you can see or hear them, but you don't have to assume that they accurately reflect your perceptions. A clear mind is like a clean window through which you can see without distortion. It has the capacity to be delighted by the smallest events, like miniature droplets of water on a silvery spiderweb. It sees metaphors for what they are--someone's mental picture or cartoon about reality rather than reality itself. It hears the ego-flattering tendency toward self deception that sometimes we all fall into, and can step out of it. It can focus on a task or precious moment without distraction, and when distraction occurs, release it and return to what is most important.

WHAT IS HAPPINESS?
........

Above all, happiness is the capacity to enjoy another person or being or situation as they are in the moment. Feeling inspired with life occurs when you are doing something you enjoy, or something that you know is valuable and you can be content while doing. It is a often a response you feel when you do something kind or helpful for another person. It also occurs when you make a difference by working to change harmful conditions, without becoming depressed or immobilized by them. If you have to ask, "Are we having fun yet?" you're probably not, because despite the phrase "the pursuit of happiness," it is something that seldom comes when you're running after it. Happiness occurs when you simply enjoy what you're doing for the sake of doing it, get something you desire, or even don't get something you desire, but feel your life to be good or getting better in spite of it. People have a considerable ability to make themselves happy or unhappy due to their attitude about their situation, no matter whatever their situation might actually be. On the other hand, telling yourself that you feel happy when you don't can mask serious troubles and paradoxically interfere with feeling happy. "Don't worry, be happy!" seems to be a happy making motto. It's worth a try.

WHAT IS INNER PEACE?

Inner peace occurs when we calm the internal conditions of agitated, fitful mind or emotions. We can often find it when we transcend limiting boundaries and break into an expansive state of consciousness that accepts reality without expecting something more. It comes most easily when we have worked through reactive tensions that cause us to get upset. "Don't sweat the small stuff" is a good starting point for moving toward inner peace. This often means letting go of much that we hold onto as normal: Restless thoughts, tight muscles, disturbing feelings and emotions, and counterproductive old habits. Beyond such letting go, we can actively relaxmind and muscles, actively cultivate activities sucha as yoga or tai chi that inspire calm presence, doing things we enjoy, hanging out in the company of other people with whom we feel content, and putting ourselves in peaceful environments such as beautiful and tranquil natural places. Also, meditation can help you release or at least lighten heavy concerns and breathe into greater inner peace and freedom.
